📈Macro Cryptocurrency News

• The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) dropped its lawsuit against Coinbase, a win for the industry after years of regulatory tension.

  • The same day, the SEC acknowledged XRP ETF filings, sparking optimism for Ripple’s token. 

• MicroStrategy has purchased another 20,356 BTC for approximately $1.99 billion, at an average price of $97,514 per Bitcoin. 

  • They now hold 499,096 BTC, which they acquired for roughly $33.1 billion. The average cost of a Bitcoin is $66,357.

• Franklin Templeton has filed for a spot in the Solana ETF. 

  • The proposed ETF is set to be listed on the Cboe BZX Exchange, with Coinbase Custody Trust Company, LLC as the custodian, and even includes provisions for staking Solana to earn rewards. 

• Crypto exchange Bybit suffered a staggering $1.4 billion theft, primarily in Ethereum-based assets like liquid-staked Ether (stETH)--this was the largest hack in crypto history and has been linked to the North Korean Lazarus Group.

  • Bybit’s CEO, Ben Zhou, confirmed the exchange has replaced the stolen funds, acquiring nearly $1.23 billion in Ether to stabilize operations. 

• In light of the hack, ByBit launched a recovery bounty program, promising security researchers and organizations 10% of retrieved funds.

  • If the full $1.4 billion stolen is recovered, contributors could split up to $140 million, potentially the largest bounty payout ever in crypto.

• FTX started tackling the enormous job of repaying creditors following its dramatic collapse in late 2022.

  • The shuttered crypto exchange kicked off its initial round of reimbursements, prioritizing those with smaller claims. However, some creditors are frustrated that FTX is basing repayments on November 2022 asset values, when Bitcoin ranged from $16,000 to $21,000.

• Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission unveiled a roadmap today with 12 initiatives to boost the crypto industry’s security, innovation, and growth.

  • Aimed at making the region a crypto hub, the plan enhances regulation, improves global liquidity access, ensures adaptive compliance, and upgrades traditional finance infrastructure using blockchain.

• The SEC concluded its lengthy investigation into Uniswap Labs, taking no action against the company. 

  • This follows last year's Wells Notice, where the SEC alleged that Uniswap Labs was running an unregistered securities exchange, acting as an unregistered broker or clearing firm, or offering an unregistered security.
